Design is a verb, not a noun.（デザインは名詞じゃない、動詞だ）」

この言葉にはどんな思いが込められているのか？
それはRoyal College of Artが30年かけて”ようやく導き出した答え”なのかもしれません。

Innovation Design Engineering（IDE）はロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アートとインペリアル・カレッジ・ロンドンのジョイントコースで、今年30周年を迎えます。この学部はプロジェクト実証のためのプロトタイピングを主な内容としてこれまで歩んで来ました。しかし、現代の学生たちは少し違う方向を目指しています。彼らの関心は単なるものづくりにはすでになく、社会の大きな問題を解決し、変革することにあります。このレクチャーではRoyal College of ArtのIDE学部長のMiles Pennington氏とともにIDEの作品群を見ながら、新世代デザイナーたちの野望、関心、活動を解説していただきます。

新しいジェネレーションは希望とチャレンジ精神を持つことを恐れていません。その精神は、例えば、2009年に卒業したDavid Grahamのこのようなセリフにも表現されています。

「IDEのおかげで、私の行動姿勢は変わりました。私には世界をよりよい方向に作り直して行く意思があります。何事も不可能ではありません。私は変革を成し遂げますので、どうぞ見ていてください。」

 

 

IDE所属学生の平均年齢は概ね28～30歳ぐらいで、そのほとんどが社会経験を持っているそうです。授業は実プロジェクトベースで、プロジェクト自体も自分たちで探し、交渉やプロマネなども行います。デザインエンジニアリングの領域においてはおそらく世界トップクラスの学部です。是非この機会にRoyal College of Art、そしてInnovation Design Engineeringがどのようなことを考え、そして実践しているか聞いてみてはいかがでしょうか？

The Department of Innovation Design Engineering is a joint course between the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London and this year celebrates its 30th anniversary. The department has always been focused on proving innovative propositions through prototyping but today students now see their opportunity to use design not to create just another object but to solve big issues and change the societies in which we live. Head of Department Miles Pennington will present the work of the department to illustrate the ambition, concerns and activity of the new generation of designers. A generation that has big hopes and big challenges but have no fear as illustrated by David Graham, IDE graduate 2009 when he said “IDE has changed my attitude, I’m going to bend the world to fit, and I won’t be told anything is impossible. I am going to make it happen and you’re going to watch me do it.” Lets see what they have it store…

Professor Miles Pennington

ロイヤル・カレッジ・オブ・アート、イノベーション・デザイン・エンジニアリング（IDE）学部長。1992年IDE卒業、日本の積水化学に数年勤務後、UKにてデザインエージェンシーDesign Streamを立ち上げる。その後2008年より現職。

IDE is a double masters course run jointly between the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London. The course has been successfully educating engineers and a diverse set of people into the world of innovation and design for the last 30 years. Miles graduated from the course in 1992 and then worked in Japan for several years for Sekisui Chemical. He returned to the UK to start his own design agency Design Stream before joining the RCA in 2008. Miles is interested in looking for interesting partners for IDE to work collaboratively with.
